Make a difference | Become a mentor
This month, you have a unique opportunity to make a difference in the life of a young person. January is National Mentoring Month, and I'd like to share with you just how valuable mentoring can be, as well as ways you can get involved.
The Power of Mentoring
Growing up, do you remember the adults who helped guide and support you along the way? Aside from your parents, you probably had important teachers, coaches, or family friends who made a big impact in your life. Mentoring connects kids to better social and economic opportunities and aids in their personal development. By mentoring a young person, you can not only help build a better future for that individual but also for future generations.
Getting Involved
Throughout this month, I encourage you to help close the mentoring gap by getting involved. Here are a few ways you can help:
- Become a mentor. Make a difference in the life of a young person by becoming a mentor. Visit Serve.gov/Mentor to find mentoring opportunities in your area.
- Become an advocate. Contact your state representatives to advocate for legislation that supports mentoring initiatives on the local, state, and federal level.
- Spread the word. Spread awareness about National Mentoring Month both in your community and online through social media.
Mentoring and Young Professionals
Mentoring isn't just for kids and teens. There are many budding young professionals who could benefit from the guidance of a professional mentor as they start out in their careers. Look for ways you can share your experience and expertise with young professionals in your community or workplace. In addition to the knowledge you impart, you may be surprised at how much you can learn in return.
Let's do our part to ensure a bright future for all young people — because the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.
